Ultherapy – what is it and how does it work?

Ultherapy is a non-invasive dermatological sculpting that utilises ultrasound technology to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin. It is often used to lift and tone areas of the face, neck, and décolletage (upper chest area). The procedure is FDA-approved and is considered an alternative to surgical facelifts or other more invasive treatments.

How does it work?

During an Ultherapy session, we use an ultrasound device to target specific layers of tissue, dermis (1.5mm) deep dermis (3.0mm) and subdermal fibrous tissue SMAS (4.0mm). This device delivers focused ultrasound energy to these deeper layers, causing controlled thermal damage. This thermal damage triggers the body’s natural healing response, which includes the production of new collagen fibres. Collagen is a protein that contributes to the skin’s firmness and elasticity.

Is it safe?

Ultherapy is a TGA approved and internationally acclaimed skin tightening device. Its safety is proven and there are minimal risks to the procedure. Ultrasound energy has been used in the medical field for more than 50 years. In addition, our therapists receive extensive procedural training and tools, so you can feel confident in choosing Ultherapy at The Lime Tree Clinic to lift those areas that need a little extra help! You will be consulted and then guided throughout the whole procedure to optimise the results to you and ensure safety.

Who would be a good candidate for this treatment?

The treatment is particularly effective for individuals who are experiencing mild to moderate skin laxity and want to address sagging skin without undergoing surgery. Ultherapy can help improve the appearance of fine lines, sagging eyelid, and loose skin on the neck. The results of Ultherapy are gradual and may become more noticeable over several months as the body’s collagen-building process takes time to repaired.

Ultherapy vs HIFU

Both treatments stimulate collagen and elastin proteins, which are the essential fibres that make up the connective tissues of our skin, to restore skin strength and firmness.

HIFU is a generic name referring to all devices that use ultrasound energy to treat the skin. Most HIFU devices are less effective, do not have the scientific evidence to support their effectiveness and may not have as stringent quality controls. Ultherapy is also the only device to have real time visualisation of the tissues during treatment so that we can target the right tissues with every energy delivery. This means it is:

  • Much more effective at delivering energy to the right skin levels. HIFU is essentially firing blindly, hoping to hit the right skin layers, instead of targeting the layers that require contraction and stimulation.
  • Much more comfortable than if real time visualisation is not used
  • And have a high safety profile

Is Ultherapy painful?

Ultherapy is a non-surgical procedure, which means there is no cutting or anaesthesia required. This generally results in less downtime and a lower risk of complications compared to surgical procedures.

While the procedure is generally well-tolerated for most people, some clients may experience deep discomfort or hit sensation during the treatment too, depending how well they tolerate pain. The discomfort is usually temporary and subsides after the procedure.

When can I see the results?

It take several months to see the full results of the treatment as the body naturally produces collagen and the skin gradually tightens.

Most of the people only need one treatment of Ultherapy a year, some may benefit from more than a single session. This will depend on the degree of skin laxity and your own response to the procedure. Six months touch-up treatments are also recommended to maintain youthful results or as a way of putting more collagen in your collagen bank.

The ultrasound device used in Ultherapy allows the practitioner to visualise the targeted tissue layers and adjust the intensity of the treatment accordingly. This allows for a tailored approach to each individual’s needs.

During treatment, our therapists at The Lime Tree Clinic will show you your skin layers during the treatment so you can see what we can see under your skin and how the energy is delivered to optimise your results.
